What is unnatural links? I got unnatural links message from Google

Google Web Spam Head Matt Cutts released a new video (11-Feb-2013) in order to answer the question asked by one of webmaster.

Dbizzle from Los Angeles asked an interesting question about “How do we know what are unnatural links pointing to our domain?

“Google Webmaster Tool says I have “Unnatural Links”, but give little help as to which specific links are bad. Since I have never purchased links, I don’t know which one to have removed, and I’m scared of removing good ones, which will hurt my traffic. Suggestions?”

What is unnatural links?

First of all I would like to tell you all that Google recently started sharing information about your bad links in Google Webmaster account (in the form of e-mail).


Normally unnatural links (or backlinks) are


  • Paid Links
  • Links from banned site or Adult sites
  • Links from link exchange network sites

If anyone of you has received such e-mails then you must want to know which links are unnatural as e-mail doesn’t tell you about exact links that Google don’t like on your back link profile.


Matt suggested two ways on how to find unnatural links to your site.

Back Link analysis

Matt suggested that, Google Webmaster Tool have provided to download your latest website backlink analysis. This functionality provides your links and date when Google have discovered these links.


Now you can check your backlinks around the date on which you received ‘Unnatural Backlink’ e-mail from Google.


It will help you to find bunch of backlinks that may be on radar. You can analyze those links and sources and then removed the links that you think are unnatural or bad links.

Matt has given a hint that soon they will roll out a change, once this change will be rolled out then all the ‘unnatural back link’ e-mail will have the example of ‘back links’ as well. These example will help you to find bad or unnatural backlinks within your back link profile.

Why Google telling us
which links are bad directly?

Now my question to Matt is, “why Google is not listing down all the bad (or unnatural) back links within the unnatural back link e-mails as it help blog/website owner to remove unnatural links”.


Why they are sending only example of bad links? Why not list of bad links?


Right now I don’t have any answer to my questions but my assumption is Google is not sharing exact bad links URL as it can help to webmaster/SEO to distinguish between natural and unnatural link logic of Google and they can plan their back link process accordingly to manipulate their client’s ranking.

Google is re-writing our Title Tags.

I was reading a discussion thread in a webmaster forum, in the thread many people reported that ‘Title Tags’ in SERP for their sites are different from what it should be. Google is re-writing ‘Title’ of our page wherever it is longer than 60 characters.

First question came in my mind what is the reason behind this ‘Title Tag’ re-writing process.


Google mentioned in its early updates that they will re-write Titles for those pages which has Title longer than 60 characters but my home page has a ‘Title Tag’ shorter than 60 characters.


One of the forum members mentioned that


  1. The title rewrite algorithm is specific to the search term.
  2. The goal is to increase clicks. How well they achieve that goal is an open question.


First point suggesting that Google re-writes your Title tag according to the search term entered by the user so that pages can get much better ranking and user can get much better results. Second point confirms my explanation for point one J


One of the members mentioned that, Google is doing this because they don’t want to rely on anything from the webmaster – Title, Description, Links, Anchor and Text etc.


Many of SEO Consultants and SEO professionals found it another Google step against SEO.

Although there is no clear cut explanation about it but different webmasters have share different points based on their experience.


  1. Google use your most used keyword while re-writing your Title Tag.
  2. Google use anchor text from your internal links to that page to re-write your Title tag.


One of the members mentioned that, “Google is using their domain company Name from ‘whois’ details while generating their Title Tags”.

4 Ways To Optimize Blog Posts For SEO

1. Enrich Quality, Diminish Quantity


All search engines have a common phenomenon of displaying posts with less usage of words at the top of search results. Yeah, when two posts are there on same topic then the smaller post is more likely to be displayed first by the bots (of course few other factors are also involved).


The successful blog post is the one wherein the blogger is capable of writing small posts with high quality content (rich use of keywords etc). However if your title demands you to write larger posts then try to be more conscious in the other factors (discussed below).


Factoid: Optimum blog size is 500-5000 words or 2000-20000 characters.


2. Keyword, Key Phrase are the Key Factors

Bots generally search through keywords, so choose the keywords relevant to your topic. There’s more; you must optimally use keywords in your post. While less usage of keywords lead to less SEO, over usage will make your post get struck with SPAM filters.


There is a lot more importance of keyword research.


Additionally, you can bold, italicize your keywords. You can also enhance the probability of bots selecting your post by using title tags (<title> or <h> tag for the keywords).


Factoid: The optimal keyword density is 5-7%. Also scatter the keywords in such a way that the beginning of the post has more density than the remaining.


The next key factor is key phrase. Key phrase is nothing but a collection of 2 or more keywords or long tail keywords. Key phrase is very vital and the usage of key phrase can be split. Let me illustrate with help of an example


If key phrase of a blog post is concert ticket booking, then the whole phrase can be used for 2 or 3 times, the words separately (concert, ticket, booking) should be used 3-7 times each (depending on length and the concept).


Factoid: Try using the key phrase in the main title; it will attract the bots even more.

3. Update Unvaryingly

To bots’ eyes recently updated blog posts are more visible. Thus you must keep updating your posts in form of comments, discussions, etc. Occasionally you could also add new content, by updating the post.


But make sure that you don’t update your published post too much just for SEO sake; you could be penalized.


If you just create a blog post and leave it forever without caring about it then bots will categorize your post to be a dead one and will deliberately lower your page rank.


Factoid: The more visits you blog post gets the more will be the probability of your post to obtain top positions in the search result.

4. Propitious Link

When you write a blog post add links to your other posts or reference posts. This is very constructive since the bots will check the links more than normal texts. This will in turn help both the posts to get maximum exposure. Internal linking helps bot track other pages on your website.


However don’t over flood your post with links. That will distract the readers and will also drain pagerank.


Factoid: It will be even more advantageous if your link also contains keywords or key phrase.


With the above-said facts, you can surely supercharge and optimize your blog posts with SEO and get high rankings. However, you need to supercharge your blogs also, to get better than the best in the competitive blogosphere.
